Michael C. Gibson is a highly regarded contemporary artist whose works in graphite pencil and gouache capture the strength and energy of the human spirit. A graduate of Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Art degree with distinction, receiving the Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Gibson's drawings are beautifully rendered meditations on ancestry, identity, and everyday life. His refined technique - rooted in strong academic tradition - reveals both discipline and sensitivity to his subject, allowing him to move seamlessly between is portraiture and his figurative work. His mastery places him in conversation with celebrated 20th century artists such as Charles White and Dox Thrash. His seemingly unfinished portraits connect across time to the works of 19th century French master draughtsman Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.
Through his art, Gibson pays homage to the resilience, grace and courage of Black men and women. Each carefully rendered piece carries a narrative that is both resonant and soulful, inviting viewers to reflect on the histories and personal stories real or imagined. His works are held in numerous private collections, as well as important public collections including the David C. Driskell Center, MD and Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth, CA. Gibson has earned recognition in juried exhibitions throughout North America.
With a studio based in Canada, Gibson lives with his wife and two children. He regularly visits his representing galleries in both the United States and Canada to lecture, engage with audiences, and present new works to an ever-growing community of collectors.
